Looking serious, Jenifer said, “Do you know those two men?”

The girl shook her head. “No, but they didn’t look like they were very nice. I hope my pa isn’t in trouble.”

“Oh, I don’t think they were policemen,” Jenifer said.

The girl looked at her—scornfully, Eric thought. “It’s not the police I’m afraid of,” she said. “I’m sorry. I’m forgetting my manners, Miz Wright. Would you like to sit down?”

“Thanks,” Jenifer said, and took a seat on the room’s one sofa.

Damn. Her body was turned away from him and he couldn’t hear her next words. The girl sat on the opposite end, facing him.

“My library fines, you mean?”

Surely Jenifer hadn’t paid a house call to collect for overdue books? Eric grinned. Well, she could do that, he supposed, but no, that did nothing to explain why Lars and Franco were also interested in this address.

The girl lowered her head. Eric strained to hear what she was saying. As he pressed his ear to the window, he felt a sharp tug on his trousers, followed by another one on his other leg. Something wet pressed against his sock, and he looked down and into the eyes of a pair of black and gray goats.

“Hey, fellows,” he said very, very softly. “Nice goats.” One of them had fairly sharp looking horns. Since when did goats grow horns? he wondered. One of them seemed to favor the taste of his slacks, and the other had started nibbling one of his Cole Haan loafers. Eric attempted to push them gently away and succeeded only in slipping off the tree stump and landing on his butt.

The black goat took this as an invitation to play and butted him on the shoulders.

Eric glanced around. A row of skinny trees backed the tiny yard behind the trailer. Scooting slowly, he edged toward the front of the trailer, the goats playing alongside. In all his years of training and field experience, no one had ever suggested how to handle a goat attack.

One backed off then took a running leap toward him, knocking him in the chest. “Good goat,” Eric said, starting to laugh. He knew he looked ridiculous and was also missing the conversation going on inside the trailer, but he couldn’t help but find it amusing.

He hoped Chester would see the humor in the situation. Or perhaps he’d leave this episode out of his report.

“There you are!”

Eric jumped as a boy yelled right behind his head. He turned and saw a boy of five or six standing with his hands on his hips, scowling ferociously.

“Bad Billy! Bad Willy!” He stomped toward the goats and pulled the one closest to Eric away, holding him by a dirty rope that Eric saw for the first time around the creature’s neck.

“I was playing Billy Goats Gruff and they ran away,” the child said. “Hello, who are you?”

“Oh, nobody,” Eric said.

The child giggled. “Of course you’re not nobody. Hey, you wanna play the troll?”

“Er, not really, but thanks for asking,” Eric said, keeping his voice low, though the child spoke so loudly that even Mrs.
